Outer Harbour Development

A Master Plan has been unveiled, to guide the development of the Port Kembla’s Outer Harbour well into the 21st century. The plan will provide the basis for decision making and staging of port development in the medium to long term.

The development will be staged to meet the needs of customers with each stage coordinated into the overall Master Plan to ensure efficient use of land. It allows for the reclamation of approximately 52 hectares of land and the construction of 7 new berths.

This project will help to meet the future growth both within the port and the region. While the current Inner Harbour development will provide facilities to cater for the growth of existing trades, this new development has the potential to address the needs of new industry. As new trade opportunities arise, the region will be able to respond accordingly.

The Environmental Assessment for the Outer Harbour Master Plan is nearly complete and is expected to be lodged with the Department of Planning by the end of September.

The assessment has included detailed studies in relation to road and rail movements, aquatic ecology, water and sediment quality, noise, hydrodynamics, air quality, cultural heritage as well as management plans for green and golden bell frogs and waste.

The Environmental Assessment process will be an opportunity for the community to have their say on the Master Plan.
